Hello, my name is Austin Florian and I am a skeleton athlete representing the United States. Don't know what skeleton is? Skeleton is similar to bobsled and luge in the fact that you are sliding down the same icy track, except in skeleton, you are sliding head first! We reach speeds in excess of 80 mph while going down the approximatly 1 mile tracks. And down the whole track our chins are only inches from the ice!
2016/2017 will be my first full season competeing in skeleton after graduating from Clarkson University spring of 2016. While at Clarkson, I was a member of the alpine ski team all four years. While I was there, we competed at and placed in the top 4 at USCSA National Championships all four years. I was also an all american at Nationals my junior and senior years. Our home training base and home race venue during my time at Clarkson was at Whiteface Mountain in Lake Placid. It was during my time in Lake Placid that I found skeleton.
This season will be my second competivtive season, and so far it has been very successful. I started with a third place in our national push championships, and finished 9th overall in National team trials qualifying for the Americas CUp circuit. I have walked away with podiums on the Americas Cup circuit in all 4 races so far this season. Already i am doing far better than last season, where i pulled a hamstring and it was difficult to have competitive downtimes with a slower push. But this season i am feeling very strong and ready to keep improving and moving up in the skeleton world.
For the rest of the 2017/2018 season, i will be finishing out the americas cup circuit attempting to win the overall title which will be a big accomplishment for me. After that i will be going out to europe to train for a couple weeks on tracks that i am not as familiar with, compared to the north american ones. From there i will be heading back to Park City Utah and Lake Placid New York where i will be preparing for our national championships in March. I hope to improve upon my finishes in this years nationals, and to keep improving as a slider into next season.
I have goals, like making the Olympic team, that I am activly pursuing everyday, but skeleton is a very expensive sport. Money becomes the biggest obstacle becasue this is a sport that is self-funded. With your support, I can more readily attempt acheive my goals of being a sucessful skeleton athlete. My goal is to raise $5,000 for the second half of this season which will help me with the expenses associated with racing and training in Europe. These expenses include:
- Race entry fees
- Car rentals
- Training fees, these can be up to $40 per run
- Baggage fees (sleds weigh over 70 lbs)
- Personal training & recovery expenses
Because I am a self funded athlete, the expenses for a tour can add up very quickly. Because we travel for almost half of the year, I am hoping that this fund will help me to support myself as an athlete through the season. I rely on my family and friends to provide the support, both mentally and monetarly, that allows me to continue to improve as an athlete. Every dollar that you donate goes directly towards all of my skeleton expenses, and any extra money raised that is not used throughout the rest of the season will go back into the fund for the next season. Any amount, no matter how large or small, is helpful.
If you cannot donate at all thats okay! I would still be incredibly grateful for any help in spreading the word! Social media is a very powerful tool, and I would love it if you let people know! Thank you for helping!
